Authorities in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province have confirmed that five people have died following days of heavy rain, strong winds, flooding, and severe thunderstorms across the O.R. Tambo District Municipality.
The fatalities include three individuals—among them a seven-year-old child—who were struck by lightning. Earlier reports had confirmed two deaths, but the toll rose on Tuesday as assessments continued in rural areas.
Local Impact: Families Displaced, Homes Destroyed
According to the municipality, more than 260 households have been affected, with approximately 160 families left homeless due to storm-related structural damage. Officials cautioned that the figure may rise as relief teams reach remote communities.
Executive Mayor Mesuli Ngqondwana expressed condolences to the bereaved families, saying: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of five lives across our district as a result of the recent severe weather conditions.”
National Context: South Africa’s Growing Climate Vulnerability
The Eastern Cape has long been vulnerable to climate extremes, with alternating cycles of drought and flooding placing strain on infrastructure and communities. The latest storms underscore the broader national challenge: South Africa is experiencing increasingly unpredictable weather patterns linked to climate change, which have intensified both humanitarian and economic pressures.
The South African Weather Service has repeatedly warned of heightened risks in provinces such as KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, where fragile housing and limited disaster preparedness amplify the impact of severe storms.
Regional Context: Southern Africa’s Climate Crisis
Across Southern Africa, extreme weather events are becoming more frequent. Mozambique and Malawi have faced devastating cyclones in recent years, while Zimbabwe and Zambia continue to grapple with prolonged droughts. The Eastern Cape’s tragedy adds to a regional pattern of climate-linked disasters that threaten food security, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
Ongoing Response
The O.R. Tambo District Municipality has issued a level-6 extreme weather warning for severe thunderstorms and urged residents to heed advisories. Relief efforts are underway in coordination with local authorities and sector partners to provide shelter and support to displaced families.
Mayor Ngqondwana emphasized the importance of vigilance: “We urge residents to continue taking severe weather warnings seriously and to prioritize safety at all times.”
