Kigali- Rwandan President Paul Kagame has extended his congratulations to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni after his victory in Uganda’s recent presidential election, reaffirming Rwanda’s commitment to continued partnership and cooperation with its neighbor.
In a message shared on social media platform X on Monday, January 19, 2026, President Kagame praised Museveni’s re-election and conveyed his goodwill to the Ugandan people as they begin a new presidential term.
“Warm congratulations to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election. I wish you and the people of Uganda continued progress and prosperity as you move forward together. I look forward to strengthening the strong and productive cooperation between our two nations,” Kagame wrote.
Uganda’s Electoral Commission officially declared Museveni the winner on January 17, following polls held on January 15. The long-serving leader secured another term after winning 71.6 percent of the vote, defeating seven challengers in the race. His closest rival, opposition figure Robert Kyagulanyi, widely known as Bobi Wine, received 24.72 percent of the ballots cast.
Rwanda and Uganda continue to enjoy close diplomatic and economic relations, with trade playing a central role in their partnership. During the third quarter of 2025, Rwandan exports to Uganda were valued at $16.4 million. The two countries also collaborate on regional security, political coordination, and military matters.
In addition to their shared border, Rwanda and Uganda maintain deep historical and cultural connections, alongside growing cooperation in regional development and economic initiatives aimed at strengthening mutual prosperity.
