Lafayette, N.Y. — A major traffic accident involving an estimated 20 to 40 vehicles was reported near Lafayette, New York, on Tuesday, as rapidly changing winter weather created dangerous driving conditions across the region.
According to preliminary reports from emergency officials, the pileup occurred on a busy stretch of roadway when a sudden snow squall swept through the area, sharply reducing visibility within minutes. Drivers traveling at highway speeds were caught off guard as whiteout conditions and slick pavement made it nearly impossible to stop or maneuver safely.
State police, fire departments, and emergency medical crews from multiple jurisdictions were dispatched to the scene to assist injured motorists and clear the roadway. Authorities said several people were evaluated for injuries, though the full extent of casualties was not immediately available as responders continued to assess the situation.

Snow squalls, while brief, are known to be especially hazardous because they can turn clear roads into icy, low-visibility zones in a matter of seconds. Meteorologists had warned earlier in the day that fast-moving bands of snow could develop across parts of Central New York, bringing intense bursts of snowfall and gusty winds.
Traffic was shut down in both directions for several hours as tow trucks removed damaged vehicles and plows worked to improve road conditions. Officials urged drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes while cleanup efforts continued.
State authorities are reminding motorists to slow down during winter weather events, increase following distance, and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility — especially during snow squalls, which are among the leading causes of large wintertime pileups.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing, and officials said more details would be released once all vehicles have been accounted for and the roadway is fully reopened.
