In a formal ceremony underscoring their contribution to stability in a volatile region, Rwandan peacekeepers serving with the United Nations in the Central African Republic (CAR) have been awarded prestigious UN service medals.
The parade, held on January 7, 2026, at the RWABG VII Base Camp in Bria, honoured the personnel of Rwanda Battle Group VII (RWABG VII) and the Rwanda Level II+ Hospital (RWAMED X). Both units operate under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) in the country’s restive Sector East.
Presiding over the event, the MINUSCA Deputy Force Commander, Major General Maychel Asmi, presented the medals and lauded the Rwandan contingents for their “professionalism, discipline, and operational effectiveness.”
“You have performed your duties with remarkable dedication,” Major General Asmi stated. He specifically commended their crucial role in supporting the recent electoral process, a key part of MINUSCA’s mandate to stabilize the country.
The Deputy Force Commander detailed the units’ contributions, praising RWABG VII for its sustained efforts in securing the Bria, Ouadda, and Sam-Ouandja areas. He also highlighted the critical work of RWAMED X, which has provided essential medical services to thousands of UN personnel and local civilians, often in challenging conditions.
For the peacekeepers, the ceremony marked a significant milestone. Lieutenant Colonel Willy Ntagara, Contingent Commander of RWABG VII, described the medal parade as “one of the highest honours in a military career.”
“This recognition is not just for us, but for Rwanda and our collective commitment to peace. It serves as a strong motivation to continue pursuing the mission’s objectives with unwavering resolve,” Lt. Col. Ntagara said.
Colonel Dr. Simon R. Nyagasaza, Commander of RWAMED X, reflected on his unit’s year-long deployment, which began in January 2025. “Our hospital has been a beacon of care and hope,” he said. “The medical services provided to MINUSCA forces and the local population have directly contributed to the operational success and humanitarian goals of our mandate.”
The United Nations service medal is awarded to peacekeepers who complete their tour of duty with distinction, symbolizing courage, discipline, and dedication. Rwanda is one of the top contributors of troops to UN peacekeeping operations globally, with its forces frequently lauded for their effectiveness and professionalism in some of the world’s most difficult theatres.
The ceremony in Bria stands as a testament to their ongoing role in protecting civilians and fostering fragile peace in the Central African Republic.
