GABIRO, Rwanda – The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) successfully wrapped up a comprehensive advanced infantry training exercise yesterday at the Gabiro Infantry Training School, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining a highly trained, combat-ready, and professional military force.
The conclusion of the rigorous program marks another milestone in the RDF’s ongoing modernization efforts, designed to ensure that Rwandan troops remain prepared for both domestic security challenges and international peacekeeping mandates.
Modern Warfare and Tactical Precision
The exercise brought together various infantry units—ranging from new recruits to experienced soldiers—to participate in high-intensity tactical preparation. The curriculum was specifically tailored to address the complexities of the modern battlefield.
According to military officials, the training focused heavily on:
-
Urban Warfare and Close-Quarters Combat: Preparing troops for high-risk environments where precision is paramount.
-
Counter-Insurgency Operations: honing skills necessary to neutralize asymmetric threats.
-
Strategic Manoeuvres: Enhancing tactical movement and seamless team coordination under pressure.
“The training reflected the modern needs of national defence,” an RDF spokesperson noted. “It ensures our forces possess the discipline and resilience required for complex operational environments.”

Leadership Emphasizes Responsibility
At the close of the training, Major General Vincent Nyakarundi, the Army Chief of Staff, addressed the soldiers and attending press. His address highlighted that technical skill must be matched by a deep sense of patriotic duty.
“Every soldier trained here today does not just shoulder a rifle, but the security and dignity of our nation. Readiness is our responsibility today, tomorrow, and every day forward.” — Maj. Gen. Vincent Nyakarundi, Army Chief of Staff
General Mubarakh Muganga also addressed the troops, stressing that continuous professional development is essential. He noted that a modern army must be capable of defending sovereignty while simultaneously contributing meaningfully to global stability.
A Deterrent for Peace
Security experts observe that the RDF’s emphasis on continuous training serves a dual purpose: operational capability and strategic deterrence. In a region with dynamic security challenges, an army that trains thoroughly is viewed as an army that can deter conflict before it begins.
This specific training cycle aligns with the RDF’s broader structural reforms aimed at improving command, capacity, and effectiveness across all military branches.
Participants expressed pride in completing the grueling program, citing increased confidence in their preparedness for future assignments—whether protecting citizens within Rwanda’s borders or serving in peace support operations abroad. As Rwanda continues to invest in security capabilities, this latest exercise demonstrates a clear dedication to military excellence and the projection of stability.
