A crowd of hundreds gathered Thursday, 16 October 2025, their hearts united in sorrow and gratitude as they bid a heartfelt farewell to Marie Immaculée Ingabire. While the air was thick with loss for the late Chairperson of Transparency International Rwanda, the service transcended mere mourning. It stood as a moving homage to her decades of unwavering service, honoring a woman who championed truth, fought for justice, and held power to account for the betterment of her nation
A Voice for the Voiceless
Speaker after speaker, from civil society to government officials and close family members, painted a portrait of a woman who embodied courage, transparency, and unwavering integrity. “She stood for what was right, even when it was difficult,” said one civil society leader. “In a world where silence often wins, she chose to speak.”
Impact Beyond Borders
Representatives from across the region and international organizations sent in messages of condolence and support. Many highlighted how Ingabire’s work went beyond Rwanda’s borders, contributing to a continental push for good governance and anti-corruption. “She helped us believe that institutions can be trusted,” said one youth activist, adding that her mentorship inspired a new generation of accountability champions.
Family and Personal Strength
Her children described her as “a mother who led by example”, while colleagues praised her as “a leader who never compromised the truth.” The ceremony also reflected the strength of the Rwandan community. Music, prayer, and silence all spoke louder than words.
A Legacy to Carry Forward
Though physically gone, many said her mission must continue. Several organizations pledged to carry on her work by launching “The Immaculée Legacy Fund”, which will support transparency education and whistleblower protection in Rwanda.
As Marie Immaculée Ingabire was laid to rest, it was clear that Rwanda did not just lose a leader — it lost a moral compass. But as her friends, family, and colleagues made clear, her vision lives on.
