With fewer than 50 days to go, Rwanda is finalising preparations to host the 2025 UCI Road World Championships, marking the first time the prestigious cycling event will be held on African soil. Scheduled for 21–28 September, the championship will transform Kigali into a global stage for elite road racing.

The Government of Rwanda has confirmed that logistical arrangements are well underway, with city-wide coordination aimed at ensuring a safe and seamless experience for athletes, officials, and spectators.

A Continental First

The event represents a milestone for Rwanda and the continent, as Kigali becomes the first African city to host the UCI Road World Championships. Thousands of fans are expected to line the streets as top cyclists from around the world race through the capital’s scenic and hilly terrain.

“This is not just a sporting event—it’s a celebration of Rwanda’s growing global presence and a chance to showcase our vibrant culture and hospitality,” said a government spokesperson.

Citywide Adjustments for a Smooth Championship

To accommodate the races, temporary road closures will be enforced along designated routes at specific hours. Authorities have announced a series of measures to minimize disruption and ensure public safety:

  • School Closures: All schools within Kigali City will remain closed from 21 to 28 September. The Ministry of Education is working closely with school administrators and parents to manage the transition.
  • Remote Work: Public servants based in Kigali are advised to work remotely during the championship, except for essential service providers. Private institutions capable of virtual operations are also encouraged to adopt remote work arrangements.
  • Traffic Management: Alternative routes and detours will be clearly marked and communicated in advance, in coordination with traffic authorities.

Fan Zones and Tourism Promotion

Special fan zones will be established across Kigali, offering residents and visitors a chance to experience the thrill of world-class cycling up close. The government is also promoting domestic tourism under the “Tembera U Rwanda – Visit Rwanda” campaign, inviting spectators to explore the country’s landscapes, heritage, and hospitality.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Rwanda to shine on the international stage,” the statement added. “We urge everyone to plan ahead, support one another, and embrace the spirit of the championship.”Further details and updates will be shared regularly through official channels to keep the public informed and prepared. Citizens, residents, and international guests are encouraged to participate and celebrate this landmark event together.
