The AFC/M23 alliance has made it clear that it will not retreat from the key cities of Goma and Bukavu, stressing its intent to collaborate with the Congolese government to establish long lasting peace for all citizens. Currently involved in peace negotiations in Doha, Qatar, the rebel group is seeking a long-term resolution to decades of conflict in eastern Congo.

According to AFC/M23 deputy spokesperson Oscar Balinda, large portions of the DRC remain outside the government’s reach, dominated by armed factions exploiting natural resources. He pointed out that territories under AFC/M23’s control have seen stability and progress, with schools, hospitals, and trade systems functioning normally.

Balinda emphasized that the group’s priority is to achieve lasting solutions through dialogue rather than making demands. He also confirmed their commitment to the ceasefire while reserving the right to protect civilians and defend their positions if provoked.

Responding to questions about leaving Goma and Bukavu, Balinda asserted that the group has no intention of abandoning these cities, declaring them their home.

AFC/M23 gained control of both cities in early 2025 after overcoming a coalition made up of Congolese government troops, FDLR rebels, local militias, foreign mercenaries, Burundian forces, and SADC units.

These AFC/M23 freedom fighters group continues to blame Kinshasa for discrimination against Kinyarwanda-speaking communities and for failing to govern effectively, which they argue has left the nation in disarray.
