CHICAGO — Independence Day festivities in Chicago turned tragic Thursday night after gunfire erupted in the Garfield Park neighborhood, resulting in the deaths of four people and leaving 14 others injured, according to police.
The shooting occurred just after 9:30 p.m. as residents gathered outdoors for a community celebration. What began as an evening of patriotic celebration quickly descended into chaos when multiple shooters opened fire into the crowd.
Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling confirmed during a press briefing that the gunfire appeared to involve more than one suspect. Authorities suspect gang activity may be behind the attack, though the investigation remains in its early stages.
“This was an unspeakable act of violence against our residents,” said Snelling. “Our department is doing everything it can to bring those responsible to justice.”
First responders arrived quickly, with paramedics transporting the injured to nearby hospitals. Several victims remain in critical condition. Those injured include a mix of teenagers and older adults, police said.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the shooting broke out. “I thought it was more fireworks at first, then I saw people ducking and screaming,” said local resident Maria Gomez. “It was terrifying.”
Mayor Brandon Johnson released a statement condemning the attack and reiterating the city’s call for stronger gun laws and broader community support. “We cannot let this kind of violence define our neighborhoods,” he said. “This isn’t just about crime — it’s about systemic issues we must address as a society.”
The incident adds to a growing number of violent episodes this year in Chicago. With over 300 homicides recorded in 2025 so far, many residents are urging leaders to take more comprehensive action to address the root causes of violence.
Local activists say increased police presence alone won’t fix the problem. “We need jobs, education, safe spaces for our youth,” said Darnell Edwards, a long-time community leader. “This is a deeper issue than what arrests can solve.”
Investigators are currently analyzing surveillance video and collecting evidence at the scene. So far, no arrests have been made, but officials are encouraging the public to come forward with tips.
As much of the nation enjoyed July 4th fireworks, Garfield Park was marked by trauma and grief. For many, the night served as a stark reminder of the harsh realities of gun violence in urban America.
“We were supposed to be celebrating,” said teenager Lamar Willis, who lost a close friend in the shooting. “Now we’re just trying to understand how this could happen.”
City officials have promised to bolster security measures and invest in violence prevention programs, but for the families affected, the damage has already been done — turning a holiday into a nightmare.
