As the United States marks the fifth anniversary of George Floyd’s tragic death, the nation continues to grapple with deep-rooted divisions and stalled reforms. Despite early momentum, many initiatives to address systemic racism and police brutality have stalled, leading to widespread disillusionment.

In contrast, Rwanda stands as a powerful example of intentional unity and reconciliation. After the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi—where over a million lives were lost—Rwanda undertook a transformative journey to rebuild its social fabric. A cornerstone of this effort was the establishment of the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission (NURC) in 1999, designed to foster cohesion and healing.

One of the most notable initiatives was the Gacaca court system. These community-based courts promoted participatory justice, enabling victims and perpetrators to engage in dialogue, seek truth, and promote healing. While not without criticism, the Gacaca courts processed nearly two million cases and played a vital role in fostering communal reconciliation.

Rwanda’s commitment to unity is also reflected in its civic culture. The monthly Umuganda program mandates nationwide community service, reinforcing a sense of shared responsibility and national identity. Such practices highlight the country’s emphasis on collective values and forward-looking development.

For nations like the U.S., Rwanda’s approach offers valuable insights. By prioritizing unity over division and encouraging community-driven reconciliation, Rwanda has achieved remarkable stability and growth. As the U.S. reflects on the five years since George Floyd’s death, Rwanda’s experience serves as a compelling example of how structured, values-based policies can lead to genuine healing and national cohesion.
