Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in New York on Monday, September 21, 2026, to attend the United Nations General Assembly, according to Iran’s Foreign Ministry.
Araghchi is the highest ranking Iranian official to enter the United States since the Middle East war began, following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Araghchi is leading the country’s delegation to the United States for the UN General Assembly’s activities.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said on X that Araghchi is expected to hold meetings with foreign ministers and other senior officials from various countries during his visit.
His arrival in the United States comes as tensions between Iran and several major powers remain high amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The visit also comes as world leaders and senior government officials gather in New York for the annual UN General Assembly, where international security issues, including the situation in the Middle East, are expected to feature prominently in discussions.
