The National Identification Agency (NIDA) is advancing the implementation of Rwanda’s digital identification system, with services also being extended to Rwandans living abroad.
The initiative is part of Rwanda’s efforts to modernize national identification services and make it easier for citizens, including those in the diaspora, to access secure and reliable identification services.
Under the digital identification process, Rwandans living abroad can begin the registration process through the available NIDA digital platforms and follow the required procedures through Rwandan embassies and consulates in their countries of residence.
The process involves the verification of personal information and the collection of biometric data, including photographs and fingerprints, where required. Rwandan diplomatic missions play an important role in facilitating access to these services for citizens living outside the country.
NIDA has also introduced a SDID Pre-Enrollment platform, allowing eligible applicants to begin the registration process before completing the required identification procedures.
The digital identification system is expected to strengthen access to public and private services while improving the security and reliability of Rwanda’s identification records.
For Rwandans in the diaspora, the initiative provides an important avenue to remain connected to Rwanda’s national identification system and access identification services without necessarily having to return to Rwanda for every procedure.
As implementation continues, NIDA is expected to provide further information on registration schedules, participating diplomatic missions and procedures applicable to Rwandans living in different countries.
