BOYDS, Maryland — Rwandans and friends of Rwanda gathered in Boyds, Maryland, on Saturday, September 5, 2026, for the 5th Edition of the Rwanda Diaspora Sports Weekend, bringing together athletes, families, community leaders, organizers and supporters for a day centered on sports, wellness, friendship and Rwandan identity.
Held at 18031 Central Park Circle under the theme “One Game. One Family. One Diaspora,” the annual gathering featured soccer, basketball, volleyball, table tennis and recreational activities. The program also carried the message “United by Our Roots. Connected Through Sports,” reflecting the broader objective of using athletics to strengthen relationships among Rwandans living across the United States and beyond.
Rwanda’s Ambassador to the United States, Mathilde Mukantabana, attended the gathering alongside members of the Embassy team and addressed the community. In her remarks, Ambassador Mukantabana emphasized the importance of unity among Rwandans abroad and encouraged members of the diaspora to maintain strong relationships with one another and with Rwanda.
The Ambassador also expressed appreciation to the organizers, athletes, volunteers and families whose participation contributed to the success of the fifth edition. She highlighted the importance of community engagement, particularly in creating opportunities for younger generations to interact, build friendships and remain connected to their Rwandan heritage.
The Embassy’s participation also carried a message of hospitality and continued partnership with the diaspora. Ambassador Mukantabana assured participants that the Embassy would continue welcoming Rwandans and friends of Rwanda and working to make members of the community feel at home whenever they come together in the Washington, D.C. area.
The successful fifth edition was made possible through the work of the organizing team and volunteers, who coordinated preparations and activities throughout the day. Their responsibilities included venue preparation, registration, team check-in, roster verification, equipment coordination, field and court organization, tournament scheduling and closing activities.
Organizers designed the event not simply as a competition but as a community experience. The program emphasized diaspora unity, friendly competition, physical fitness and pride in Rwandan heritage. Participants were encouraged to compete fairly, respect one another and celebrate together regardless of the final results.
Competition took place across indoor and outdoor venues. Soccer teams competed on the fields in Boyds, while basketball and volleyball players participated in matches inside the sports facility. Table tennis and other recreational activities expanded participation and created additional opportunities for community members to interact.
Families, friends and spectators contributed to the atmosphere throughout the day. Teams posed together, athletes competed enthusiastically, supporters socialized and community members shared moments away from the playing fields. The gathering demonstrated that the Sports Weekend had developed into more than a tournament—it also served as a reunion for members of the Rwandan diaspora.
The event further highlighted the value of sports in promoting healthy lifestyles. By combining organized competition, recreational activities and social interaction, the Sports Weekend encouraged physical activity while creating an environment in which wellness became part of a broader community experience.
For Rwandans living in different parts of the United States and Canada, gatherings such as the Sports Weekend provide opportunities to reconnect and strengthen community networks. They also offer younger generations a space to develop friendships, experience Rwandan culture and become more involved in diaspora community life.
As competitions moved toward the finals, champions, runners-up and participants were recognized during the closing program. Yet the significance of the day extended beyond trophies and results. Athletes who competed against one another ultimately celebrated as members of the same community, demonstrating how sporting rivalry can coexist with friendship, mutual respect and solidarity.

Participants and organizers voted and selected the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area to host the next edition of the Rwanda Diaspora Sports Weekend, choosing to return to the region following the success of this year’s gathering in Maryland. The decision reflected enthusiasm for continuing the momentum created during the fifth edition and bringing the diaspora together again in an area that is home to a significant Rwandan community.
The Embassy welcomed the decision and expressed its readiness to receive participants again, reinforcing its commitment to ensuring that Rwandans and friends of Rwanda gathering in the Washington area continue to feel welcomed and at home. The message added a sense of continuity to the weekend: the conclusion of one edition was already opening the way for another opportunity to strengthen relationships across the diaspora.
The presence of Ambassador Mukantabana and Embassy staff, together with the commitment of the organizing team, volunteers, athletes, families and supporters, helped make the fifth edition a visible celebration of an active and connected Rwandan diaspora.
As the 5th Rwanda Diaspora Sports Weekend concluded in Maryland, participants left with more than memories of competition. They departed with renewed friendships, stronger community connections and a collective decision to gather again in the Washington, D.C. area. Different teams may compete on the field and court, but the enduring message of the weekend remained “One Game. One Family. One Diaspora”—a reminder that sports can continue bringing Rwandans together through unity, participation and shared heritage.
