Pierre Picavet, president of the LGBTQ rights association FLAG! and an active-duty police officer, was hospitalised following a brutal, late-night assault in Paris’s historic Marais district. Prosecutors have officially classified the incident as a homophobic attack.

The assault took place overnight from Saturday, August 29, to Sunday, August 30, 2026, as Picavet was leaving a local bar. According to the Paris prosecutor’s office, the assailant struck Picavet with a bottle, resulting in severe injuries that included a deep head wound and internal bleeding.

Despite Picavet immediately identifying himself as a law enforcement officer and displaying his police credentials, the attacker continued the assault, repeatedly hurling homophobic slurs. FLAG! is a prominent Paris-based organization that unites employees across France’s interior and justice ministries to combat anti-LGBTQ discrimination and support personnel within the public sector.

Suspect Apprehended as Leaders Condemn Violence

Law enforcement officers quickly intervened, taking the suspected attacker into custody at the scene. Preliminary investigations by prosecutors revealed that the suspect was heavily intoxicated at the time of the assault and possessed no prior criminal record. An formal judicial inquiry has been opened into charges of aggravated violence committed because of the victim’s sexual orientation.

The attack has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation from civil rights groups and civic leaders across France. FLAG! and advocacy group STOP Homophobie released strong statements denouncing the violence, sharing graphic details of Picavet’s injuries to highlight the ongoing threat of anti-LGBT+ hate crimes.

“STOP Homophobie condemns this attack in the strongest possible terms and stresses that anti-LGBT+ violence remains a reality,” the association stated.

Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire took to social media to voice his outrage over the incident, labelling it a “despicable homophobic attack”.

“We will never surrender our streets to hatred,” Grégoire wrote. “Paris will remain a refuge, a bulwark and a city of freedom for everyone.”
