NAIROBI, Kenya — In a major milestone for minimally invasive surgical care, Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH,N) has successfully performed the region’s first robotic-assisted gallbladder removal surgery.
The procedure, known medically as a robotic-assisted laparoscopic cholecystectomy, introduces advanced robotic technology to an operation traditionally performed through conventional keyhole surgery. It marks a significant step forward in East Africa’s medical capabilities, promising enhanced precision for surgeons and faster recovery times for patients.
How the Technology Works
Despite the term “robotic surgery,” the robotic system does not perform the operation independently. Instead, the surgeon remains entirely in control, operating the camera and specialized surgical instruments from a highly advanced console situated in the operating theatre.
Dr. Abdulkarim Abdalla, Chair of the Department of Surgery at AKUH,N, explained that the technology builds on the established benefits of conventional keyhole surgery. It provides the surgical team with a high-definition, three-dimensional view of the surgical field.
“The robotic instruments have a greater range of movement and closely mimic the motions of the human hand, enabling greater precision and control during surgery,” Dr. Abdalla noted. “This allows us to perform procedures more safely.”
The setup also offers significant ergonomic benefits for the medical team. Because surgeons can operate the machine while seated at the console, it drastically reduces physical fatigue during lengthy or complex procedures.
Patient Benefits and Broader Impact
For patients, the robotic-assisted approach retains all the core advantages of minimally invasive surgery. These include:

While robotic surgery is becoming increasingly common in hospitals internationally for pelvic and abdominal procedures, its introduction in East Africa is a notable step. AKUH,N plans to use the new robotic platform as part of a wider program that includes expanding access to robotic-assisted surgeries for more patients and advancing surgical training and research across East Africa.
The introduction of such advanced technology in Kenya does raise ongoing questions regarding cost and accessibility, as robotic procedures require specialized equipment, regular maintenance, and highly trained personnel. However, medical experts view this initial success as a crucial foundation. As surgeons in the region build experience with the platform, it is expected to pave the way for greater clinical value and eventual broader accessibility for patients requiring complex surgical care.
