JUBA, South Sudan — Rwandan peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have received recognition from senior mission leadership for their professionalism, discipline and operational readiness during a high-level visit to their contingent in Juba.
UNMISS Deputy Force Commander Major General Robert Yaw Affram visited members of RWANBATT-3 at their base in Durupi, Juba, on August 18, 2026. Accompanied by officials from UNMISS Headquarters, Affram reviewed the contingent’s activities and received an operational briefing on its responsibilities within the United Nations peacekeeping mission.
Lieutenant Colonel Maurice Kayinamura, the Rwandan contingent’s Deputy Commander, welcomed the UNMISS delegation and presented an overview of the unit’s mandate, current operations and challenges encountered while carrying out assigned peacekeeping responsibilities. The discussions provided mission leadership with an opportunity to assess the contingent’s preparedness and its ability to operate in South Sudan’s complex security environment.
According to an official statement from the Rwanda Ministry of Defence, Major General Affram praised the Rwandan personnel for their “professionalism, discipline, commitment, readiness” and contribution to the UNMISS mandate. He encouraged the peacekeepers to preserve those standards as they continue fulfilling their responsibilities.
Affram also emphasized the importance of remaining alert and capable of adjusting to changing circumstances. He urged RWANBATT-3 personnel to maintain vigilance and preparedness as new security and operational requirements emerge during the mission.
During his visit, the Deputy Force Commander toured the Rwandan camp and examined operational equipment and capabilities, gaining a closer view of the conditions under which the contingent performs its duties. The inspection formed part of the broader engagement between UNMISS leadership and peacekeeping personnel deployed in the field.
Rwanda has maintained a significant presence in international peacekeeping operations, deploying military and police personnel to missions tasked with protecting civilians and supporting stability in conflict-affected countries. The visit to RWANBATT-3 highlighted the continuing role of Rwandan personnel within UNMISS and the importance placed on discipline, preparedness and effective execution of the mission’s responsibilities.
