Renewed attacks in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo have intensified concerns over civilian safety after reports of deadly violence in parts of North Kivu and Ituri provinces. According to statements released by AFC/M23 representatives, communities in areas under their administration are experiencing relative stability, while they allege that security conditions remain fragile in territories controlled by the government in Kinshasa. The claims have been verified by our correspondent in Goma.
The statement followed reports that several civilians were killed during attacks over the last weekend in the city of Beni, North Kivu, and in Mambasa, Ituri Province. Local accounts indicated that homes were destroyed by fire and families were displaced as residents sought safety from the violence. The attacks were attributed to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an armed group that has carried out repeated assaults against civilians in eastern DR Congo, ADF has been working closely with the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC).
Commenting on the incidents, AFC/M23 officials argued that the continued insecurity demonstrates what they described as failures by the Kinshasa government to adequately protect affected communities. They further alleged that the persistence of conflict benefits the country’s political leadership by creating conditions that could complicate preparations for the 2028 general elections.
Humanitarian organizations have continued to call for stronger measures to safeguard civilians, expand humanitarian access, and pursue lasting political solutions that address the root causes of the conflict. A resident from one of the affected communities who didn’t want her name to appear in public media said, “Our greatest hope is to live in peace, liberated and see our families protected from repeated violence.” Humanitarian organizations have likewise emphasized the urgency of protecting civilians, stating that all parties should prioritize the safety, dignity, and welfare of communities caught in the conflict. Regional and international observers continue to encourage dialogue, accountability, and coordinated security efforts as essential steps toward achieving long-term peace and stability in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
