ARLINGTON, Texas — The stage is set for a blockbuster FIFA World Cup semifinal as two football giants, France and Spain, collide in a battle that could define a generation.
Neither Kylian Mbappé’s France nor teenage sensation Lamine Yamal’s Spain has fallen behind at any moment in this year’s tournament. However, only one team will survive Tuesday’s heavyweight showdown and secure a place in the World Cup final.
The semifinal, being played at the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, marks only the second meeting between France and Spain at the biggest stage of international football. Both nations are appearing at their 17th World Cup tournament.
France entered the competition as the world’s top-ranked team and has continued to prove its dominance, scoring 14 goals while conceding just two. Mbappé, the 2022 World Cup Golden Boot winner, has been unstoppable, scoring eight goals to join Lionel Messi at the top of the tournament’s scoring chart.
The French captain is also closing in on history. With 20 goals in 20 World Cup appearances, Mbappé is only one goal away from matching Messi’s all time World Cup record of 21 goals.
“We are confident, of course, with the course we have done so far, but always with this humility that has characterized us since the beginning of the competition,” France midfielder Adrien Rabiot said.
Mbappé’s World Cup journey has already placed him among football legends. The 27-year-old scored in the 2018 final victory over Croatia, becoming only the second teenager after Pelé to score in a World Cup final.
France coach Didier Deschamps has also confirmed that Mbappé is fully fit after he was substituted in the quarterfinal victory over Morocco.
But standing in France’s way is Spain’s new superstar, Lamine Yamal.
The teenager, who celebrated his 19th birthday on Monday, has already experienced success against France. Yamal helped Spain defeat Les Bleus in the 2024 European Championship semifinal, scoring a stunning goal in a 2-1 victory. Spain also defeated France in the Nations League last year.
“I believe if France has to fear anyone, it should be us,” Yamal said after Spain’s quarterfinal win over Belgium. “We were the ones that knocked them out before.”
Despite carrying a hamstring issue into the tournament, Yamal has continued to impress. The Barcelona winger has recorded one goal and created numerous attacking opportunities, proving why he is considered one of football’s brightest young talents.
With Mbappé’s experience on one side and Yamal’s fearless brilliance on the other, the semifinal promises a dramatic clash between football’s present and future.
France wants another World Cup final. Spain wants to announce a new era. Tonight, only one dream will survive.
