Portugal booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dramatic 2–1 victory over Croatia in a chaotic and emotional knockout clash decided by late VAR intervention and a stoppage-time winner from Gonçalo Ramos.
At 41, Cristiano Ronaldo once again delivered on the biggest stage, scoring a second-half penalty that brought Portugal level after Croatia had taken the lead. The match also marked another milestone in Ronaldo’s record-breaking World Cup career, as he registered his first knockout-stage goal of the tournament.
Croatia opened the scoring in the 53rd minute through Ivan Perišić, who finished off a well-worked cross from Josip Stanišić, putting the 2018 and 2022 finalists in control of the match.
But Portugal responded under pressure. In the 68th minute, Ronaldo calmly converted from the penalty spot after Nikola Vlašić was penalized for a holding foul inside the box. The Portugal captain struck down the middle as the goalkeeper dived the wrong way, leveling the contest at 1–1.
Ronaldo was substituted in the 81st minute, but the game exploded into life in stoppage time. Substitute Gonçalo Ramos rose above the Croatian defense to head home a 94th-minute winner, sending Portugal into wild celebrations.
However, controversy followed immediately. Croatia thought they had equalized moments later, only for their goal to be ruled out for offside after a VAR review that lasted more than two minutes. The decision sparked furious protests from Croatian players and fans, with bottles thrown onto the pitch in frustration.
Croatia midfielder Petar Sučić insisted the disallowed goal should have stood, claiming confusion over the VAR explanation involving the match ball technology. Portugal coach Roberto Martínez, however, defended the ruling, stating that the chip inside the ball clearly confirmed the decision.
The match also carried emotional weight off the pitch, as Ronaldo was seen wearing a Diogo Jota jersey during a post-match interview, honoring his late teammate who died in a car crash. “It was a special moment,” Ronaldo said, reflecting on the tribute and Portugal’s hard-fought win.
The contest featured a symbolic showdown between two football legends,Ronaldo and Croatia’s Luka Modrić, both in their 40s and former Real Madrid teammates. The pair shared an embrace before kickoff and exchanged words again after the final whistle.
Ronaldo praised Modrić as “a legend of football,” while Croatia coach Zlatko Dalić suggested this could be Modrić’s final World Cup appearance.
Portugal will now face Spain in the Round of 16 on Monday, carrying momentum from a match defined by late drama, emotional moments, and controversy.
